Boxing Day Hunt Meet - Meldon Park, Morpeth, Northumberland

A month has since passed since Christmas and whilst some New Year's resolutions are set  to be broken, others aren't. One being is my determination to blog countlessly this year.

Boxing day is a day where most sit around still digesting their christmas dinners, forcing themselves to eat that last Thornton's chocolate, or dare I say it, spend a day with a few family members they really despise. However spent, this year or should I say last year, I spent it our hunting with the Morpeth contingent.

Boxing Day is a day of tradition and so be it that hundreds of supporters on foot and horseback turned out at Meldon Park, Morpeth to support the hunt.

The established hunts set off across the region early in the day with riders using animal-scented trails for the hounds to track.
The law may have banned fox hunting but that failed to detract from the annual Boxing Day spectacle, or of locals’ enjoyment of it.
Supporters came in their dozens to the picturesque Meldon Park. Views over look the vast countryside for miles and miles. Meldon Park welcomed the Morpeth huntsmen, horses and hounds before they set off on a trail hunt, following a scent laid down by the hunt leaders.

A welcome liquid breakfast of whiskey and brandy was offered to supporters as a gesture of goodwill. A few swigs of homemade bullshot and Percy Specials and the hunt was ready to go.
I was spending the day on the back of a Quad bike following the hunt. We were 30 Quads strong and closely followed the 70 or so horses and huntsmen.
For this particular day, I wore layers and layers of the warmest clothing topped off with my Joules Field coat. Sadly, I don't have any photo of what I was wearing but I think maybe that was a good thing!!
We set off around 11am following the hunt around the countryside. Due to the nature of the ground and the weather, I didn't take my camera but have some photos taken by iPhone.
You may wonder, why is following a bunch of horses around endless fields a good way to spend boxing day? It was fun as I was experiencing a tradition not only prominent in the North East, but in England too. It was a great way to meet others, socialise and spend a great day in the countryside.

New Years Day Percy Hunt meet at Alnwick Castle

*Insert hungover related status here* Oh wait....

Last night I choose to stay in and see the New Year in with my family. It made the prospect of getting up early, charging my batteries and cleaning my lenses a piece of cake.
I choose to attend the Percy Hunt meet at Alnwick Castle. The medieval castle and home to the Percy family, more commonly known as the Duchy of Northumberland, Alnwick Castle provided a fantastic back drop to a great day.

Here are some of my photographs from the meet.

Interview: Claire Zambuni & Helen Barbour

Interview with Helen Barbour & Claire Zambuni

Claire and Helen provided me with an insight on what to wear when taking part in these sports.

Are you part of any clubs?
Claire - Yes, the Covert girls. There is about 1500 on the database. People are signing up all of the time after the article on the Financial Times. They aren’t active, but more social. A lot come and join us shooting once they’ve met us and get involved. My first Covert girl shoot in Yorkshire sold out in 24 hrs.

How many shoots per year?

Claire - Quite a lot, most are mixed nowadays either clays or game. I’ve four private companies offering

hospitality to their Women clients and tailored it to their needs.
Game or Clay?
Helen - I prefer Game, clay is very boring and quite tense. I don’t like standing there and saying, “Pull.” I hated Grouse, driven game is what I enjoy. I really enjoy the social element and seeing people I know. It’s a nice day out. Whereas walked up grouse shooting isn’t my idea of fun.
Claire - I love Grouse shooting, stalking and extreme hunting. I’m going to the lsle of Mull in January and have rented a cottage in the middle of nowhere were we have to drag our own carcusses - my idea of heaven. I love all sorts of hunting.

What do you wear when you go shooting?
Helen - Barbour. I wear a Belford jacket and Dubarry boots. But Barbour are bringing out a whole range of Barbour shooting range at the Game Fair next year. The mans featherweight jacket has been taken and styled so it has all the features of the jacket but more lightweight and fitting of the female form. A limited colelction will be brought out but will be enough for women to style. We’ve brought out a mens shooting range with Lord James Percy and developed a recent footwear.
Claire - Leather breeks, a Barbour jacket, a bespoke shooting trousers and a fox fur hat. I like my Links Jacket which I wear for stalking. It’s fleece lined and waterproof but with a waist. Stalking is all about disguising yourself therefore fabric plays a huge part in the function. Scandanavian companies are natural hunters therefore they do fabulous stalking clothes.
